Europe is preparing to turn towards Russia due to pressure from the United States. This opinion was expressed by Foreign Policy magazine on February 6.

"The change in the European strategy was initiated by US President Donald Trump himself, who excluded the Europeans from the process of drafting a peace agreement directly related to European security," the article says.

The publication notes that Europe is at a crossroads: it can either transfer business with Moscow to Trump and not be sure of the results, or take a pragmatic approach and resume its ties with Russia, despite the low level of bilateral relations.

The article also emphasizes that there are calls in Europe for the need to listen to the words of French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni about direct negotiations with Moscow. This is how the European Union (EU) is trying to reduce its dependence on Washington, the magazine points out.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said earlier in the day that the EU was ready to negotiate with Russia, but warned against contacts with the country that were not coordinated at the level of Europe, Ukraine and the United States. The reason for this reaction was the information about Bonn's alleged visit to Russia.

On February 4, Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silinja and Estonian President Alar Karis called for the resumption of direct negotiations with Russia and proposed appointing an EU special envoy for these purposes.
