The ancient inhabitants of the ocean could not have survived to this day, since the climatic changes of the Earth throughout its history have affected the oceanic fauna. This conclusion was made by the head of the Laboratory of Bottom Fauna of the Ocean at the P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Doctor of Biological Sciences Andrey Gebruk.

"There is such a term as "refugium". It is an isolated place where something is preserved in its original form. And so there was an idea of the depths of the ocean as such a refuge. <...> It turned out that this is a completely wrong idea, because the ocean is a very complex system, but at the same time very dynamic," Gebruk said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He noted that the water circulation system covers all depths, and therefore the fauna not only on land, but also in the water was being rebuilt — some species appeared and survived, some died.
