American and Ukrainian negotiators discussed the possible holding of elections in Ukraine and a referendum on resolving the crisis. This was reported on February 7 by the Reuters news agency, citing sources.

"According to the scheme discussed during the negotiations between the United States and Ukraine, any agreement will be submitted to a referendum of Ukrainian voters who will simultaneously participate in national elections," the publication says.

It is noted that during the discussions, the United States and Ukraine set a goal to achieve a peaceful settlement in March this year. At the same time, such a deadline will probably be postponed due to the lack of agreement between the parties on the key issue of territorial ownership.

"Two sources reported that U.S. and Ukrainian officials discussed the possibility of holding national elections and a referendum in May," the agency reports.

During the meeting in Abu Dhabi, the American negotiating group, led by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and US President's son-in-law Jared Kushner, expressed the opinion that the best option would be to hold a vote "in the near future."

On February 2, Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, said that the Kremlin would recognize the elections in Ukraine, depending on how they were held. He also admitted the safety of Ukraine "in some form" after the removal of the Kiev regime and recalled the unacceptability of deploying a foreign contingent in the country as a guarantee of security.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on February 1 that he had not yet made a final decision on whether he would run for a second term if elections were held. When asked about his plans after the end of hostilities, the politician noted that he "just wants to be with the children a little more," adding that "today it doesn't matter where."
