Russia and Brazil call for reform of the UN Security Council
Russia and Brazil consider the reform of the UN Security Council necessary and advocate the inclusion of developing countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa. The provision is contained in a joint statement by the parties following the VIII meeting of the Russian-Brazilian high-level commission on cooperation, published on February 5 on the website of the Russian government.
"We agreed on the need to promote the reform of the UN Security Council in order to make it more representative by including the developing countries of Latin America, Asia and Africa in accordance with the realities of a multipolar world," the document says.
It stresses that Russia has confirmed its support for Brazil as a candidate for permanent membership in the reformed UN Security Council. The statement states: Moscow and Brasilia believe that it is timely and appropriate now to elect a representative of Latin American and Caribbean countries to the post of Secretary General of the world organization.
On January 28, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed Russia's position in favor of a balanced transformation of the UN Security Council. In particular, the minister pointed out that the body should be given a more democratic character by increasing the number of representatives from the countries of the Global South and the East.
