The European Union (EU) has no legal grounds to require states that are not members of the union to implement the sanctions measures imposed by the EU against Russia. This was stated on February 5 by the EU Special Representative for sanctions, David O'Sullivan, in an interview with the British newspaper Guardian.

"No country in the world that is not a member of the EU is obliged to comply with our sanctions," he stressed.

O'Sullivan noted that Brussels is aware of the sovereign right of third countries to independently determine their foreign economic policy. According to him, he allegedly does not consider it correct to automatically accuse non-EU states of non-compliance with European restrictive measures.

The Politico newspaper reported the day before that EU representatives were delayed in preparing and adopting the 20th package of sanctions against Russia. The interlocutors of the publication explained that measures can be taken spontaneously, literally "at any moment."

On January 30, Bloomberg suggested that as part of the new measures, Europe could replace the ceiling on Russian oil prices, while banning the transportation of this natural oily flammable liquid and products from it by sea. Later it became known that the EU may ban the import of copper and platinum from Russia. In addition to these metals, restrictions may also apply to iridium and rhodium.
