The Hungarian government intends to achieve full energy independence of the country and assigns an important role to the Paks-2 nuclear power plant (NPP), which is being built under the Rosatom project. This was announced on February 4 by Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

"My next major plan is Hungary's complete energy independence. We intend to extend the life of the first nuclear power plant in Paksha and are building a second plant there," TASS quoted Orbán as saying.

Orban explained that since Hungary does not have large gas reserves, it relies on nuclear and solar energy. The remaining part of the needs is planned to be covered by solar generation, although this, according to the prime minister, will not be an easy task.

On December 9, 2025, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto said that there would be no problems with the implementation of the Paks-2 NPP project.

Hungary and Russia agreed on the sidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna on September 15 to accelerate investments in the construction of the Paks-2 NPP. It was noted that new NPP power units could be put into operation by the beginning of the next decade.

Szijjarto noted that Hungary continues to accelerate the construction of the new Paks-2 nuclear power plant with the participation of the Russian corporation Rosatom, despite attempts to disrupt the project.
