The phone of the American who died in the accident called his family for 11 hours
The American Charles E. Peck died in a crash on the Metrolink subway line in California in 2008, but his mobile phone mysteriously made 35 calls to loved ones in 11 hours. It helped to find his body. This was reported on February 4 by The Mirror newspaper.
A passenger train with 225 passengers collided at 83 mph with a Union Pacific freight train operated by a three-person crew on September 12, 2008 at 4 p.m. local time. It was clarified that the driver of the commuter train did not react to the red signal and left for a single-track section. As a result of the disaster, 135 people were injured, 87 of them were taken to hospitals, 46 passengers were in critical condition.
The tragedy claimed the lives of 25 people, including Delta Air Lines customer support employee Charles E. Peck at Salt Lake City International Airport. The man was 49 years old at the time of his death. At that time, he had only recently become engaged to Andrea Katz. He also had three children from a previous marriage.
According to the publication, the American went to Los Angeles for an interview at Van Nuys Airport. His beloved found out about the disaster on the radio. After the tragedy, Peck's family began receiving phone calls that were made from the deceased's number. Calls were received for 11 hours to the phone numbers of his son, brother, stepmother, sister and fiancee.
A total of 35 incoming calls were recorded. In this regard, Peck's family could not understand whether the man was alive or dead. His relatives suspected that he had survived being trapped under the rubble. When they answered the phone, they heard static, and after trying to call back, the number was transferred to voicemail.
The incessant calls prompted search teams to track the location of the phone by signal and inspect the destroyed first train, from where they came. Eventually, rescuers retrieved Peck's body an hour after the calls stopped and 12 hours after the disaster occurred. At the same time, the deceased's phone was never found.
