Ukrainians may be required to pay compensation for moral damage for refusing a wedding after an engagement. This was reported on February 4 by the RBC-Ukraine news agency.

"The current version of the document provides for compensation of expenses for wedding preparations. <...> And the new bill explicitly provides for compensation for moral damage to the injured party," the article says.

In addition, the fate of the gifts is clearly defined. If the marriage did not take place, the donor "has the right to demand the termination of the donation agreement through the court." In this case, the item must be returned, and if it has not been preserved, its full value must be reimbursed.

However, compensation will not be required if the person has abandoned the marriage due to the partner's unlawful behavior or concealment of certain facts about himself: serious illness, criminal record, or being married.

Earlier that day, the leadership of the Verkhovna Rada made a proposal to lower the minimum age of a girl for marriage from 16 to 14 years. The deputies proposed to establish that persons of the opposite sex who have reached the age of marriage have the right to marry. For pregnant women or girls who have given birth, this threshold may be 14 years old.
