- Politico has learned about the growing understanding in Kiev of the unreliability of Western guarantees
There is a growing understanding in Kiev of the unreliability of security guarantees from Western allies in a possible peace agreement, which forces Ukraine to prepare for independent defense. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on February 3, citing sources in the Ukrainian leadership.
"Previously, the vision primarily focused on the protection obligations provided by the partners. Today, however, there is a clear understanding that the core of any security guarantees should be the Ukrainian army and its defense industry," said Alyona Hetmanchuk, head of Ukraine's mission to NATO.
The publication notes that US President Donald Trump has ruled out Ukraine's accession to NATO, which forces Kiev to look for alternative options. At the same time, Ukraine remembers how the promises made by the United States and Great Britain in 1994 in exchange for giving up their nuclear arsenal turned out to be empty.
Under these conditions, according to the newspaper, the Ukrainian leadership is betting on creating a powerful army of its own, developing the production of drones and missiles, as well as reforming the defense sector.
During his visit to Kiev, NATO Secretary General Jens Rutte said that Ukraine's security would be ensured by the presence of allied troops on the ground, in the air and at sea, but Ukrainian experts express skepticism about the reliability of such agreements."Газета.Ru ".
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada on February 3, said that immediately after the conclusion of the peace agreement, the armed forces of those countries of the alliance that agree to this would arrive on the territory of Ukraine. According to him, those NATO members who will not send their armed forces to the country will help "in a different way."
On February 2, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the deployment of Western military installations on the territory of Ukraine was unacceptable to Russia. He also rejected the model of crisis resolution proposed by Kiev, which involves the deployment of "multinational forces" to ensure Ukraine's security. The minister called it "the creation of a strong point for further struggle against Russia."
