After the expiration of the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START Treaty), the Russian side will act in a balanced and responsible manner. This was announced on February 4 by Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov.

"The President (Russian Federation Vladimir Putin — Ed.) drew attention to the fact that tomorrow, February 5, the treaty on the termination of strategic offensive arms expires. As you know, we proposed to the Americans on September 22, 2025, to extend the central quantitative limits for 1 year as voluntary self—restrictions, but the official response from the Americans has not been received," Ushakov said at a briefing.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 3 that it would be very bad for strategic security if Russia and the United States remained without the START Treaty. According to him, time is rapidly decreasing, and in just a few days the world may find itself in a more dangerous situation than before.

In September, the Russian president announced Russia's readiness to adhere to the restrictions under the START Treaty for another year after February 5, 2026. In turn, the American leader Donald Trump called Russia's proposal on the START Treaty a good idea.
