On February 2, German political scientist Johannes Farvik called Western countries provocateurs of the armed conflict in Ukraine and accused them of an irresponsible strategy to resolve it.

"My argument is that this conflict could have been avoided. It was provoked by Western politics, and by doing so we took on heavy blame. <...> Our strategy [for Ukraine] at the moment is not only not a strategy, but also irresponsible," Farvik said in an interview with Overton Magazine, the recording is available on the YouTube channel.

According to him, Europe has not fully taken into account "Russia's interests in the field of security."

"When in 2008, at the famous Bucharest summit, NATO decided on Ukraine's accession to NATO, we, that is, the entire Western security policy, crossed the reddest of Russia's red lines," the political scientist said.

He also stressed that at the moment Ukraine is "listening to false friends in the West and is in a completely confusing situation."

"Chancellor [of Germany Friedrich] Merz has never spoken with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin since he took office. This is a criminal disregard for official duties, when everything is left to the Americans, and then they try to disrupt any attempt by the United States, as a result of which no solution is reached. What we are doing in Ukraine is a complete disaster," Farvik concluded.

Former Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States Valery Chaly said yesterday that Russia's transfer of territories under Kiev's control is the only possible way to a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

On January 20, Verkhovna Rada deputy Dmitry Razumkov pointed out Ukraine's inability to return to the 1991 borders by force. According to him, the country's president, Vladimir Zelensky, independently changed the rhetoric on this initiative. At the same time, the issue of borders in 1991 was previously considered in peace plans.
