The release of documents in the case of financier Jeffrey Epstein, accused of crimes against minors and human trafficking, took place against the backdrop of an internal political struggle in the United States and could be part of a "distraction maneuver" to reduce public negativity from a potential military conflict with Iran. On February 2, American political scientist and journalist Garland Nixon told Izvestia.

"First of all, there was certainly a certain political struggle, because there was one faction - I would say a small faction — in Washington that wanted their publication. And there was a large faction that didn't want that. The so—called establishment did not want to publish Epstein's files," he said.

The journalist said that the second "faction" opposed the publication of the documents, as their publication could damage the interests of the American establishment. He also pointed out that the political struggle in this situation continued even despite the adoption of a law on the publication of files on the financier's case.

"I think it's reasonable to consider the publication not only from the point of view of the content of the files, but also from the point of view of the strategic nature of their publication, as well as current events taking place in the Middle East," the political scientist said.

So, in the context of a possible conflict between the United States and Iran, according to polls, only 18% of Americans support military action. In this regard, the publication of scandalous documents could become a distraction that could reduce public discontent with the invasion of the Islamic Republic.

"I fully accept that the publication of Epstein's files could be, to some extent, a distraction from this extremely important issue, while people in power are trying to determine which direction to move in," Nixon said.

On the same day, retired U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Earl Rasmussen told Izvestia that the release of files on the Epstein case may have a political reason. He pointed out that the scandal surrounding the documents affects not only the United States, as a large number of people around the world were also involved in this situation. Thus, the new batch of declassified files contains references to the Rothschild banking dynasty, as well as high-ranking politicians from Israel.

Earlier that day, it became known that Epstein's released files contain documents indicating his connection with girls from Samara and Saratov. According to one of the documents, we are talking about a graduate of Samara State University of Economics, who worked as a model in New York, participated in global brand shows, and later became a co-owner and teacher of the modeling school in Samara.

On February 1, the NYT newspaper learned about the publication by the US Department of Justice of nude photos of girls in the Epstein case. It was noted that 40 shots were recorded on the agency's website, which showed people with their faces uncovered. Those captured in the pictures were on the island, in bedrooms and other private spaces belonging to the financier.
