A court in London has found the Russian captain of the container ship Solong, Vladimir Motin, guilty of manslaughter after the vessel collided with the American oil tanker Stena Immaculate off the British coast. This was reported on February 2 by Sky News channel.

"Motin was found guilty of manslaughter by gross negligence after his container ship collided with a tanker at anchor," the statement said.

Sky News recalls that the collision occurred off the east coast of Great Britain. A fire broke out on both ships, a rescue operation was carried out, and 36 sailors from two crews were brought ashore. One member of the container ship's crew is missing.

James Leonard, Motin's lawyer, had previously stated that the cargo ship was uncontrollable before the incident. The captain himself denied the charges and noted that he did not know about the man in the bow of the ship who was thrown overboard. At the same time, Motin admitted a mistake when switching to manual control, not noticing that the autopilot was still on.

Earlier, on March 10, 2025, a tanker and a container ship Solong collided off the northeast coast of England, causing a large fire. Sky News channel announced the rescue of all 37 sailors on board the ships, but later it was reported that one of them was missing.

According to the Russian Embassy in the UK, there were five Russians on board the cargo ship, one of them the captain, who was charged with manslaughter. All Russian citizens are alive and unharmed, the diplomatic mission added.

On March 14 last year, it was reported that Russian diplomats had a telephone conversation with a Russian citizen detained in the UK, the captain of the Solong vessel. It is specified that the Russian citizen has been provided with an interpreter and a lawyer.
