The State Duma reacted to the call for dialogue in Europe
The creation of a communication channel between the European Union (EU) and Russia on Ukraine depends on what tasks the Europeans set for themselves. Alexey Chepa, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Relations, expressed this opinion on Monday, February 2.
Earlier, on February 1, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barraud said that the European Union (EU) needs a direct channel of communication with Russia, RT reports. He noted that the Europeans, who are Ukraine's main financial and military sponsors, should have a communication channel to defend their interests without shifting responsibility to anyone else, according to the website. kp.ru .
Commenting on the words of French President Emmanuel Macron about the resumption of dialogue with Russia, Barraud clarified that it should take place in full transparency for Ukraine.
"I don't understand what tasks they want to set for themselves. If the goal is to continue the policy they have pursued since 2014, then it is unlikely that we will be interested in discussing anything with them in this way. Attempts to pressure us, blackmail us and get more predictable results from their assumptions are one thing. What will they achieve?" — said the deputy in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
He added that if the Europeans are opposed to advancing the peace agreement and are doing everything to ensure that the conflict continues, then such a communication channel is not needed, but Russia is ready to cooperate if it is of some pragmatic and useful nature.
Macron said on December 19 that representatives of the European Union and Ukraine needed to talk to the Russian leader. He stressed that it is important for Europeans not to trust this dialogue exclusively to intermediaries.
