It became known about a new fraudulent scheme with sending letters about "cashback"
Attackers can send messages to Russian citizens about cashback allegedly due for online purchases made on marketplaces. Interaction with such a notification will transfer victims to a phishing site and provide fraudsters with access to personal data. This was announced on February 2 by representatives of the press service of the Moshelovka platform of the Popular Front.
"A message arrives in the messenger, allegedly from a popular marketplace. For example: "You get 15% cashback for purchases in January! Activate the bonus before February 10th." The link leads to a clone site that mimics the personal account of a marketplace or partner bank. After logging in, the account data gets to the scammers," they said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The corresponding scheme, as specified in the organization, is especially relevant in February, since it is in this month that sellers arrange New Year's Eve promotions. Using this fact, criminals, working with representatives of their target audience — people who actively shop online — are trying to commit data theft.
Moshelovka experts urged Russians not to follow links from unknown contacts and to check promotions on the official website and application of marketplaces.
Natalia Kolbasina, head of corporate well-being programs at the Findorovye service of the National Center for Financial Literacy, reported on January 31 that fraudsters often use human greed and fear to their advantage. According to her, these powerful emotions cause a sharp release of the stress hormone cortisol into the blood, which in turn blocks the work of the prefrontal cortex. Being in this state, a citizen, as Kolbasina clarified, acts based on his instincts — his brain begins to send signals prompting immediate action.
