The Jerusalem Post reported on the opening of the Rafah border crossing by Israel
Israel will reopen the Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt in both directions to civilians. This was reported on January 30 by The Jerusalem Post newspaper with reference to the Coordinator of Government Actions in the Palestinian Territories (COGAT).
It is specified that the suppression of the border crossing for civilians will be possible only after coordination with Egypt, which will then transfer the names of those wishing to cross the checkpoint to the Israeli Security Agency (Shin Bet).
According to the newspaper, those who want to pass through the checkpoint to the Egyptian side will have to be checked by representatives of the European Union, the Palestinian Authority and the Shin Bet.
According to the article, the return of civilians from Egypt to Gaza will be allowed only to those who left the territory of the enclave during the conflict, and only with the prior approval of Israel.
Ahmed Majdalani, a member of the executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), reported on January 22 that the Palestinian side accuses Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of deliberately delaying the opening of the Rafah checkpoint and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the Gaza Strip. According to Majdalani, the establishment of the Palestinian committee for the management of the Gaza Strip means the transition to the second phase of the settlement.
