The introduction of a possible ban on the import of Russian nuclear fuel into the European Union (EU) is a politicized measure that will damage the safety of the European nuclear energy complex. Alexey Likhachev, the head of the Rosatom state corporation, said this in an interview with reporters on January 29.

"The ban on Russian fuel will undoubtedly affect the economic performance of the European nuclear energy complex. <...> This initiative is so politicized that there is no sense left," Interfax quoted him as saying.

He added that the main problem is the issue of nuclear and radiation safety of the community countries, since fuel is the main element of the nuclear cycle.

"We have concerns in this regard, the IAEA has concerns in this regard, and I hope that common sense will prevail over the desire to increase the number of anti—Russian sanctions," Likhachev said.

On January 26, the Council of the European Union (EU) approved a complete ban on the supply of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) from January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas from September 30, 2027.,

According to Igor Yushkov, an expert at the Financial University and the National Energy Security Fund, Europe's rejection of LNG and pipeline gas from Russia will create fuel shortages and rising prices on the market. It will also lead to the further deindustrialization of Europe.
