- The UK reported the arrest of the driver who caused a fatal accident on Lake Baikal.
The driver of a car involved in an accident on the ice of Lake Baikal, as a result of which a tourist was killed, has been detained. This was announced on January 29 by the Investigative Committee (IC) of Russia.
"A 41-year—old SUV driver was taken to the investigative authorities of the Investigative Committee of Russia in the Irkutsk region, who allowed it to overturn on the ice of Lake Baikal, resulting in the death of a tourist," the Telegram channel said.
The investigation revealed that the man did not have a driver's license and had never received one. The driver was questioned as a suspect under clause "b" of Part 2 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of a person by negligence"). The UK plans to petition the court for the election of a preventive measure in the form of detention.
The day before, the Irkutsk Regional Prosecutor's office reported that a car carrying tourists overturned on the ice of Lake Baikal near the village of Malomorets. The driver, who was transporting tourists near the island of Olkhon, lost control and ran into a crevice in the ice. The car carrying 10 tourists overturned. One of the women, a 75-year-old passenger, died on the spot from her injuries.
