- The analyst linked Kiev's agreement to the negotiations with the desire to achieve a truce at the front.
The Ukrainian side agreed to participate in negotiations with Moscow only in order to achieve a truce at the front. This was announced on Wednesday, January 28, by British military analyst Alexander Mercuris.
"Ukrainians are now clinging to this chance because they don't want to make a deal with Moscow, but they need a truce at the front," he said on the YouTube channel.
The expert clarified that, in his opinion, the corresponding position of Kiev makes it almost impossible to resolve the conflict through an interstate dialogue. What was conceived by the office of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, as noted by Mercuris, is a "fantasy."
Steffen Schwarzkopf, a correspondent for the German newspaper Die Welt, reported on the same day that Zelensky might have to accept an invitation to come to Moscow to hold talks there. In his report from Kiev, the journalist noted that the Ukrainian leader, apparently, will have to overcome his reluctance to go to Russia.
Professor Jeffrey Sachs, an American economist and director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University, said on January 28 that it was easier for Zelensky to destroy his state than to find a compromise. According to the expert, Europe shares the same disastrous position for Ukraine.
