A woman died on Lake Baikal after a car with tourists overturned on ice.

A car carrying tourists overturned on the ice of Lake Baikal near the village of Malomorets, as a result of the incident, one person was killed, the Irkutsk Regional Prosecutor's Office reported on January 28.

"A UAZ car overturned, resulting in the death of a female tourist who was in the car," the agency's website says.

A criminal case has been opened in the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Irkutsk region under paragraph "b" of Part 2 of Article 238 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Provision of services that do not meet safety requirements, resulting in the death of a person by negligence").

According to the website of the regional Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, a driver transporting tourists near the island of Olkhon lost control and ran into a crevice in the ice. The car carrying 10 tourists overturned. One of the women, a 75-year-old passenger, died on the spot from her injuries.

The deceased, according to preliminary data, was a tourist from China, TASS points out, citing law enforcement agencies. According to the press service of the Federal State Budgetary Institution Zapovednoe Pribaikalie, two more participants in the accident were injured and sought help, they probably have head and spine injuries. The national park explained that the departure of cars on the ice is strictly prohibited, warning signs indicate that fines are imposed for this.

The Olkhon district prosecutor's office took control of the circumstances of the emergency. Police officers and investigators of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation are establishing the circumstances and causes of the incident.
