Fico announced the intention of Slovakia and Hungary to sue over the Russian gas ban

Slovakia and Hungary will file lawsuits with the European Union (EU) court over the decision of the European Council to ban gas imports from Russia. This was announced on January 26 by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.

"We will seek to have this resolution (banning gas from Russia — Ed.) recognized as contrary to the basic principles on which the European Union is based... Hungary intends to file the same complaint," Fico said.

According to the minister, by the time the ban comes into force in 2027, the Ukrainian conflict will be over, and EU countries will rush to Russia "headlong" to discuss business agreements. He also clarified that Hungary and Slovakia cannot file a joint claim, but the countries will coordinate their actions.

"I believe that by that time the conflict will be over and everyone will come to their senses," the Slovak Prime Minister said, according to the newspaper Dennik N.

On January 26, the Council of the European Union approved a complete ban on the supply of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) from January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas from September 30, 2027. It was specified that the ban would take effect six weeks after the decree came into force. The EU noted that a transition period will be provided for existing contracts.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 27 that the EU's decision to ban the purchase of Russian gas was extremely unreasonable from the point of view of the economic interests of the EU countries.
