- Politico has learned about the rift between Rutte and Paris over the future of Europe's security
Disagreements have escalated between Paris and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte over the future of European security and the ability to defend itself without US help. The Politico newspaper writes about this on January 27.
"No, dear Mark Rutte. Europeans can and should take responsibility for their own security. Even the United States agrees with this. This is the European pillar of NATO," X (ex. Twitter) French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barraud.
Barro's position is supported by other French officials. For example, the country's former ambassador to NATO, Muriel Domenac, wrote that "demonstrating European weakness in order to obtain US guarantees is an outdated approach that sends the wrong signal."
At the same time, French Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin said she sees "the need for a European component of NATO."
Paris is one of the main engines of initiatives for the development of the European military-industrial sector and the creation of a capable pan-European army. However, the NATO Secretary General does not share the French enthusiasm, arguing that the Europeans need to "stop dreaming" and strengthen their partnership with the Americans to ensure their own security, the newspaper writes.
"The European pillar [of NATO] is an empty word," Rutte told lawmakers from the European Parliament's defense and foreign affairs committees the day before.
On January 26, the NATO Secretary General announced the end of an era when the United States bore the main burden of ensuring Europe's security. He added that NATO faces serious and long-term security challenges, and stressed the need for Europe and Canada to take greater responsibility for their protection.
