The Italian city of Nishemi was on the edge of a cliff due to a landslide.
In the Italian city of Nisemi, located in the province of Caltanissetta, an emergency evacuation of about a thousand local residents was carried out due to the threat of a landslide caused by prolonged bad weather. This was announced on January 26 by the Virgilio Notizie portal.
The natural disaster led to the fact that residential buildings were on the verge of a giant cliff, and part of the urban infrastructure was absorbed by the moving ground. The regional authorities have decided to close key roads and suspend the work of educational institutions due to the high risk of new collapses.
An operational headquarters was deployed at the scene of the incident, which coordinates the work of rescue services and deals with the distribution of victims. The landslide front stretched for 4 km and continues to move deep into residential areas, threatening to destroy dozens of private homes and office buildings.
Fabio Ciciliano, head of the Civil Defense Service, warned that the number of people evacuated would continue to grow as the ground continued to move. Many residents whose homes are trapped in the disaster area will probably not be able to return, as their homes are located on the fault line.
Some of the evacuees were accommodated in a local sports complex, converted into a temporary residence, while others found shelter with relatives. The situation in the city remains critical, as Nishemi is practically cut off from the outside world due to the destruction of transport arteries.
The Governor of Sicily, Renato Shifani, described the situation as an emergency requiring the intervention of national authorities. Experts are trying to find engineering solutions to stabilize the soil, but the instability of the soil significantly complicates the work of technicians and rescuers in the danger zone.
On January 24, Reuters reported a landslide in Indonesia. Earlier, the Indonesian Meteorological Agency warned of heavy rains in the region during the week. The landslide occurred in the village of Pasir Langu, which is located in a hilly area about 100 km southeast of Jakarta. The disaster destroyed over 30 residential buildings. According to the latest data, seven people were killed and 82 more were missing.
In turn, the representative of the National Disaster Management Agency of Indonesia, Abdul Muhari, said that search and rescue operations are complicated by the ongoing precipitation and new small landslides. Drones and heavy machinery are used for the search.
