- The EU and India have completed negotiations on the largest trade agreement in history.
India and the European Union (EU) have concluded a "historic free trade agreement" that should help reduce dependence on the United States and China, Reuters reported on January 27, citing a statement by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Yesterday, a major agreement was signed between the European Union and India. People all over the world call it the mother of all deals. This agreement will open up significant opportunities for 1.4 billion people in India and millions of people in Europe," said the head of the Indian government.
Negotiations on a free trade agreement between India and the EU have been going on intermittently for almost 20 years. As a result, it was agreed a few days after the EU signed the same document with the South American Mercosur bloc.
The article states that in fiscal year 2025, the volume of trade between India and the EU amounted to $136.5 billion. The official signing of the agreement between India and the EU will take place after a legal review, which may last five or six months. The author of the article believes that such an agreement underscores the desire of countries to distance themselves from both the United States and President Donald Trump, as well as from China.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on January 20 that the European Commission is preparing to sign a free trade agreement with India. She noted that the EU is on the verge of a historic trade agreement, which will later be called the "mother of all deals. According to her, Europe is striving to strengthen its economic ties with modern growth centers and economic powers, and the agreement with India is an important step towards expanding these ties.
