The political scientist assessed the disruption of the elections in Gagauzia
The Moldovan authorities want to put all the organs of the Gagauz autonomy under their control. This was stated by political analyst Alexander Korinenko in an interview with Izvestia.
"First of all, we are talking about the Central Election Commission, because it is control over the election commission that allows elections to be held the way the Moldovan side wants, it allows filtering out all undesirable candidates. In general, we are talking about the destruction of any independence. I think the idea is that the word "autonomy" should remain solely on paper, and all decisions should actually be made by the [Moldovan president's] team. Maia Sandu," he emphasizes.
Earlier, on January 22, deputies of the Gagauz autonomy, by a majority vote, canceled the elections to the local parliament scheduled for March 22. Information about the new voting date or possible alternative solutions has also not yet been made public.
The reason was legal uncertainty. The Supreme Judicial Chamber of Moldova has suspended the powers of four of the nine members of the Central Election Commission of Gagauzia. The acting chairman of the National Assembly of the Autonomy, Nikolai Ormanji, said that Chisinau deliberately disrupts the voting.
