In Russia, it was proposed to introduce a new type of state registration plates for cars — green for electric cars and turquoise for unmanned vehicles. Anton Shaparin, Vice President of the National Automobile Union (NAS), told Izvestia on January 26 that a letter describing the initiative had been sent to Mikhail Mishustin, Prime Minister of the Russian Federation.

It is assumed that the use of green license plates for electric vehicles will simplify the control of their owners' use of parking and toll roads. As for self-driving cars, the introduction of turquoise license plates will make them more visible to other road users.

"Road users, ordinary motorists, will understand that an automated road user is driving nearby, who observes traffic regulations, who sees 60 [km/h] on the sign and drives 60 [km/h], and not 80 [km/h] like ordinary drivers. If one of the drivers drives like that, they usually start cutting him off after that, considering that he slows down all traffic," Shaparin explained.

As for electric cars, ordinary cars often get into the parking spaces allocated for them, for which fines and evacuation are provided. Employees of the State Traffic Inspectorate and city services have to find out whether it is an electric car according to documents or not, said the vice president of NAS.

Earlier, on January 21, it was reported that the Russian Ministry of Transport had developed a draft federal law that defines the conditions for the admission of highly automated vehicles (VATS) to highways and tramways throughout Russia. If adopted, it will enter into force on September 1, 2027.
