Chernyshov offered to compensate the rent of housing for students with children

The deputies proposed to compensate part of the rental costs for students with children who are not provided with a place in a dormitory. This became known on January 25.

Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Boris Chernyshov proposed to develop a mechanism for targeted subsidization of rental housing costs for student families with children.

"The amount of the subsidy can range from 50 to 70% of the average market cost of renting a one—room apartment in a particular city or district," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

According to Chernyshov, the lack of affordable housing puts student families in front of a choice — to abandon their studies or bear an unbearable financial burden, which negatively affects the academic performance of parents and the well-being of children.

It will be fixed at the federal level, and now the conditions are determined by educational institutions.

Earlier, on October 23, 2025, it was reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of improving support for student families. He noted that the system of social assistance to families with children should be clear and transparent. The Head of state also announced an increase in maternity benefits for full-time students and the opening of mother and child rooms at universities. Putin called for continued measures in the higher education system aimed at supporting the birth rate.
