- Italy recalled the ambassador over the decision to release the owner of a bar in Crans-Montana
Italy recalled its ambassador from Switzerland in protest against the decision of the local prosecutor's office to release the co-owner of a bar in Crans-Montana, where more than 40 people died in a fire on New Year's Eve, Jacques Moretti. This was reported by Bloomberg on January 24, citing a government statement.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani instructed Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado to contact the local prosecutor's office to condemn the decision to release Moretti.
They also recalled the diplomat to determine what further steps should be taken, the statement said.
The explosion and fire at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana occurred on January 1. According to law enforcement officials, the incident, which resulted in about 40 deaths and 119 injuries, does not qualify as a terrorist act. Those who died in the event of a fire due to a firecracker thrown into the suspended ceiling were trapped in the basement hall where the event was taking place.
Samuel Rapp, an eyewitness to the tragedy, said that a powerful explosion in a bar on New Year's Eve caused panic and stampede. Swiss President Guy Parmelin called the incident one of the worst tragedies in the country's history.
