The United States has given Europe a leading role in supporting Ukraine as part of a new defense strategy

The United States believes that Washington's European allies in NATO will have to take a leading role in supporting Ukraine with limited American influence. This is reported in the US defense strategy for 2026, which was published on January 23.

"Our NATO allies are in a strong position to assume primary responsibility for Europe's conventional defense with critical but more limited U.S. support. This includes a leading role in supporting Ukraine's defense," the document says.

It is noted that the new US strategy does not imply isolationism, but at the same time supports realism in the worldview.
