It is expected that the body of Russian swimmer Nikolai Svechnikov, who died in Turkey, will be returned to Russia on Saturday, January 24. This was announced on January 24 by the athlete's mother Galina Svechnikova.
"On Saturday, January 24, exactly five months after his disappearance, it is planned to send Nikolai's body by flight from Istanbul to Moscow," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.
Earlier, on January 21, it was confirmed that the body found in the Bosphorus Strait belongs to Svechnikov.
The intention of the Svechnikov family to take his body to Russia became known on January 22. Alyona Karaman, a relative of the athlete, said that the athlete's parents had already identified his body.
The Russian Consulate General in Istanbul said on the same day that it assumed that the competent Turkish authorities would establish all the circumstances and causes of Svechnikov's death. They also expressed their condolences to Nikolai's family and friends.
The Russian athlete disappeared on August 24 last year. Svechnikov did not reach the finish line through the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul. After swimming 500-600 m, the swimmer disappeared from sight.
