The appearance of edema after eating can be an alarming signal indicating hidden health problems. As Irina Volgina, associate professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, explained in an interview with Izvestia on January 25, products that do not contain toxic substances cannot cause puffiness in a healthy person.

"If such a reaction is observed, this is a reason to consult a doctor for diagnosis, as the cause often lies in pathologies of the cardiovascular system, kidneys, liver or endocrine glands. In patients with pre—existing diseases, edema can provoke whole food groups," the specialist said.

The "blacklist" includes salty snacks — chips, crackers, salted fish and cheeses, sauces; sweet foods, including pastries, cakes and carbonated drinks; spicy, fatty, fried and canned dishes, especially homemade pickles. Fast food, alcohol, and caffeinated beverages are also at risk.

The main mechanism, Volgina explains, is water retention in the body due to the high content of salt and sugar, which disrupt the water-salt balance. In addition, puffiness can be caused by foods with gluten (wheat, rye) and histamine (fermented foods), as well as any product in case of individual allergic intolerance. A number of products containing dietary supplements such as monosodium glutamate increase thirst and appetite, which also contributes to fluid accumulation.

To correct the condition, the doctor strongly recommends that you do not self-medicate, but contact a specialist to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe therapy.

"In parallel, it is necessary to limit or completely eliminate provocative foods from the diet. There are no universal dietary recommendations for combating edema: in some cases, increasing the consumption of clean water can help, while in others, for example, with heart or kidney failure, it can worsen the situation," the expert concluded.

On January 15, Medical Xpress magazine reported that the DASH diet was once again recognized as the best for heart health in the U.S. News & World Report Best Diets 2026 ranking. According to the publication, such a high mark was awarded for a solid scientific base, balanced composition, flexibility and the absence of strict prohibitions.
