- The political scientist explained Trump's withdrawal of Canada's invitation to the Peace Council
The statement by US President Donald Trump that the "Peace Council" on Gaza is withdrawing its invitation to Canada to join the organization should be seen as a political signal to Washington's allies, and not as a spontaneous reaction. Yevgeny Zlenko, project manager of the Polylog Group, told Izvestia on January 23.
"Trump's statement is Washington's demonstrative response to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's visit to Beijing. The agreements signed there on reducing duties and, critically, the declaration on a "new strategic partnership" in energy and clean technologies were regarded by the White House as a direct attempt by Ottawa to reduce its foreign policy and economic dependence on the United States in favor of China," the political scientist explained.
In the context of the acute strategic rivalry between Washington and Beijing, such a step, according to Zlenko, was regarded by the American administration as extremely unfriendly. He noted that Trump's reaction is demonstrative and is addressed not only to the Canadian leadership.
"Trump is simply sending a signal not only to Canada, but also to all his other allies that a reorientation towards Beijing will be punished by the loss of status within the framework of pro—American coalitions," the expert concluded.
On the same day, Trump announced that the "Peace Council" had withdrawn Canada's invitation to join the organization. The reasons for the American leader's decision are unknown.
