- In St. Petersburg, they called the introduction of a paid entrance to the city inevitable
The appearance of paid entry of cars into the center of such megacities as St. Petersburg is inevitable in the future. This was stated by the speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Alexander Belsky, writes TASS on January 23.
Belsky advocated the inclusion of St. Petersburg among the first cities in Russia where an experiment on the introduction of paid entry could be conducted. He shared that the introduction of such a fee is being discussed at the federal level, but no decision has been made yet. The chairman of the St. Petersburg Parliament noted that "for large megacities, as world practice shows, this is inevitable."
"If an experiment is going to be conducted, I would insist that St. Petersburg be included in it. Because there is international experience that shows that the situation in the city can change very seriously in connection with the paid entrance to the center," Belsky said and noted that he expresses a personal point of view.
He pointed out that a large number of cars means a strain on buildings and roads in the historic center, which translates into a burden on the budget, which should be reduced. He also noted the effectiveness of the recently introduced new tariff system for paid parking — in some areas of the city, traffic decreased by about 10%.
Earlier, on January 19, it was reported that, as Kirill Polyakov, the vice-governor of St. Petersburg, said, there are no plans to expand the paid parking zone in the city this year. New tariffs for paid parking in St. Petersburg began operating on October 15 last year.
