- The Japanese government dissolved the lower house of parliament on the first day of its convocation.
The Japanese government officially decided to dissolve the lower house of parliament on the first day of its convocation. The document was approved at a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers. This was announced on January 23 by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
"The initiative was signed by all representatives of the executive branch. The document will be submitted to Parliament on the day of the beginning of the 220th session. The dissolution will be formalized officially after the chairman of the chamber, Fukushiro Nukaga, reads out the decision," Japanese state television and radio broadcaster NHK quoted her as saying.
The Prime Minister has serious political expectations for the upcoming elections. NHK reports that the head of government intends to use the consistently high cabinet rating to improve the LDP's election results after the party's unsuccessful performance in 2024.
Prime Minister Takaichi announced her intention to dissolve the lower house and call new elections on Monday, January 19. She cited the need to "find out the opinion of the people" as the main reason.
