- The United States will be able to completely withdraw troops from Syria after the defeats of the Kurds
Washington is exploring the option of a complete withdrawal of American troops from Syria after the defeats of the Kurdish coalition. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal on January 22, citing sources.
"The events of last week made the Pentagon question the expediency of the US army's mission in Syria after the defeat of the SDF (the Kurdish Forces of Democratic Syria coalition — Ed.)," unnamed US officials told the publication.
It is noted that there are approximately 1,000 American military personnel in Syria, most of whom are stationed in the northeast of the country along with the SDF. WSJ sources also pointed out the difficulties of cooperating with the forces of interim Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who is trying to seize control of the region.
Earlier, on January 18, it was reported that a new agreement on an immediate ceasefire between the government and the Kurdish militia had been signed in Syria. According to the document, the Kurdish forces should withdraw to the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, and the oil and gas fields and border posts in the northeast of the country will come under the control of the authorities. The agreement also stipulates that SDF members will be able to join the Syrian army and other security forces with guarantees of protecting Kurdish areas.
