President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has appointed the country's new ambassador to Russia, Yuri Seliverstov, as Deputy Prime Minister for relations with the Russian Federation. This was reported on January 22 on the website of the press service of the Belarusian leader.

"In accordance with the decree, Yuri Seliverstov has been appointed Deputy Prime Minister for Belarus' activities within the framework of the Union state and relations with Russia," the statement said.

It is specified that in his new role, Seliverstov will represent the republic in contacts with officials and government agencies of Russia, as well as in the structures of the Union State on all issues of bilateral cooperation.

Earlier that day, Lukashenko replaced the republic's ambassador to Russia. He explained that Seliverstov, described as a tough and assertive person, is ideally suited to work in Russian regions and resolve key issues in trade and bilateral relations.
