- Zakharova reported on the absence of a US response to Putin's initiative on the START Treaty
Russia has not yet received an official response from the United States to Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal to extend the restrictions of the Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty (START Treaty). This was announced on January 22 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"As of today, we are still in a situation of some uncertainty. The Russian side has still not received any substantive official response from the United States through bilateral channels to the post-START Treaty initiative," she said.
Zakharova noted that Moscow has to rely only on public statements by US President Donald Trump, which are "speculative and often contradictory."
The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the START Treaty expires on February 5, and Russia prefers to refrain from forecasts until that date. Zakharova also recalled that Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly stated Russia's readiness for any scenario.
In September, Putin announced Russia's readiness to adhere to the START Treaty restrictions for another year after February 5, 2026. In turn, the American leader Donald Trump called Russia's proposal on the START Treaty a good idea.
Later, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov noted that Russia had not received an official response from the United States to the START Treaty initiative. According to him, if the United States is not interested in the proposal of the Russian Federation, the state will dispense with the reaction of the American side.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu said on December 10 that less than 100 days remained before the expiration of the START agreement between Russia and the United States.
