Every year on January 25, Russian Students' Day or Tatiana's Day is celebrated in our country — a celebration combining the church veneration of the holy Martyr Tatiana of Rome and the secular holiday of university students. Izvestia tells us what needs to be done on this day in order to successfully complete the session and attract good luck.

Tatiana's Day on January 25 — how Student's Day appeared in Russia

Initially, Tatiana's Day was dedicated to the memory of the holy Martyr Tatiana of Rome, who lived in the III century. She was the daughter of a noble Roman who raised her in the Christian faith. Upon reaching adulthood, the girl renounced worldly goods and devoted herself to a spiritual life, taking a vow of celibacy.

For her virtues, Tatiana was appointed deaconess of the Roman Church — she received the right to interpret the Gospel and prepare people for the sacrament of baptism. The saint cared for the sick, visited prisoners, and helped those in need. During the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus, who began the persecution of believers, she refused to sacrifice to idols and was sentenced to death.

According to legend, after severe tortures, the martyr was thrown into the arena of the Colosseum to be torn to pieces by a lion, but the beast did not touch her. After that, the saint and eight servants of the governor, who believed in God, were beheaded with a sword.

Tatiana of Rome became the patroness of students already in the XVIII century. On her memorial day, January 25 (January 12, Old Style), 1755, Empress Elizabeth Petrovna signed a decree "On the establishment of Moscow University" — now Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The initiator of the creation of the university was the favorite of the Empress Ivan Shuvalov, and the ideological inspirer was Mikhail Lomonosov. According to legend, Shuvalov chose this date as a gift to his mother Tatiana Shuvalova on her name day.

In 1791, the house church of the Holy Martyr Tatiana was consecrated at Moscow University, and her memorial day turned into an unofficial holiday of Moscow students. In 1850, by decree of Nicholas I, the celebration received official status and spread to all universities of the Russian Empire. Traditionally, on January 25, student celebrations were held throughout the country, which had a huge scale. Students of all classes drank and had fun together, temporarily forgetting about their differences.

After the revolution of 1917, the holiday lost its gaiety and scope. A full-fledged revival of Student's Day occurred only in 2005, when the President of Russia re-established the official status of the celebration.

Student signs on Tatiana's day on January 25

Since Saint Tatiana is considered the patroness of students, she is often asked for help in her studies. This is especially true during the winter session, which usually ends at the end of January.

There are many student superstitions and traditions associated with the holiday. One of the most famous signs is "Freebie, come!". On the night of January 25, you need to go out on the balcony or to the open window and loudly call for luck, holding an open credit book in your hands. If the student hears "I'm on my way!" in response, then the exam will be easy. The absence of an answer is considered a neutral sign, but if a student hears "You need to learn!", it means that you should not count on a freebie.

Other popular student signs:

  • "The house in the test": at noon on January 25, you need to draw a house with a chimney on the last page of the test book. The longer the smoke from the pipe, the easier the session will be.;
  • Getting up with your left foot: waking up on Tatiana's day, you need to get out of bed, leaning on your left leg to attract good luck in your studies;
  • A piglet under the heel: to get an "excellent", it is recommended to put a five-ruble coin under the heel before the exam;
  • Ask to scold: on the day of the exam, you can ask your family to criticize the student. The more they scold, the easier the exam will be, but you can not touch the student's mental abilities — this will scare away luck.

What a student should not do on Tatiana's day

There are also a number of prohibitions associated with the holiday, which, according to student beliefs, help preserve luck and knowledge. On Tatiana's day, you can't:

  • washing your hair — you can "wash off" knowledge;
  • to learn and repeat the material — the information will not be absorbed, and luck will go away;
  • quarrel with someone - the conflict may drag on.;
  • to refuse requests — luck will leave;
  • Talking about academic success can be a jinx.;
  • Spending a day alone and longing for failure;
  • to throw away garbage is to "throw away" knowledge.

Folk traditions of Tatiana's Day

In Russia, various beliefs were also associated with Tatiana's Day. It was believed that on her feast day, Saint Tatiana fulfilled any good wishes, so she was approached with various requests.

Traditionally, women baked a loaf, symbolizing the sun. Every family member had to taste this bread — it promised health and well-being for the whole year. Bread crumbs were not thrown away, but given to birds or livestock, for fear of losing their wealth.

In order for peace and tranquility to reign in the house, the housewives went to the river to knock out rugs. Clean mats were then laid at the entrance — it was believed that this creates a barrier to all bad things.

For unmarried girls, Tatiana's Day was considered a favorable time for dating and arranging a personal life. Therefore, they wore their best outfits and jewelry, hoping to attract the attention of a handsome young man.
