Lavrov compared the situation with Greenland and the return of Crimea to Russia.
The Crimean Peninsula plays no less an important role for Russia than Greenland does for the United States. He stated this on January 20 during a press conference on the results of Russian diplomacy in 2025.
"Crimea is no less important for the security of the Russian Federation than Greenland is for the United States," he said.
Commenting on the statements of Western politicians about the need for Greenland's self-determination, Lavrov recalled their attitude to the situation with the return of Crimea to Russia. The Foreign Minister noted that in Crimea, people went to a referendum after the anti-corruption coup, when the putschists who came to power declared war on the Russian language, while in Greenland there were no coups.
"When they say such things, at least they would think a step forward or a step back and remember what they said about the right to self—determination of the people of Crimea, Donbass and Novorossiya," Lavrov said.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump, following telephone talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, announced that a meeting of various parties on the situation with Greenland would be held in Davos.
On the same day, the US president declared that Denmark was not capable of defending Greenland. According to him, some Danish officials don't even visit the island. He added that the United States should get the island.
On January 14, Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark are "good," but Greenland is necessary for Washington to ensure national security.
