MTS will increase the access of Internet traffic on the border with Belarus
By the end of 2026, MTS will increase the network capacity for international Internet traffic on the border with Belarus near the city of Velikiye Luki from the current 800 Mbit/s to more than 2 Tbit/s.
According to the company's press service, "the increase in the capacity of the cross-border crossing is aimed at increasing the reliability of Internet traffic passing westward and creating a reserve for the transit of constantly growing traffic in the coming years." DWDM (400G) equipment is used as the channel medium.
"Ensuring Internet connectivity is an important condition for the development of the country's telecommunications and IT industries. Internet traffic from international resources to Russian consumers and back is growing organically from year to year. To ensure its smooth passage, MTS builds, expands and diversifies geographically dispersed capacities to international data centers in proportion to the growth in traffic consumption by our customers," said Olga Makarova, Director of the MTS Commercial Resource Management Department.
According to her, one of the directions of this activity is the opening of new and increasing the capacity of existing cross—border crossings.
MTS network traffic is transmitted to the Internet through five geographically separated routes in the western and eastern directions.
The capacity of a cross—border crossing is the maximum amount of data that can simultaneously pass through a specific communication channel on the border of two countries.
