Political scientist Koltashov called Greenland the EU's payment for deceiving the United States

The plan of the American President Donald Trump to appropriate Greenland is the payment of the European Union (EU) for the deception of the United States by Europe in the Ukrainian issue. Vasily Koltashov, a political scientist and head of the Center for Political Economic Research, told Izvestia on January 20.

"Greenland is an American commission that Trump takes from the EU for being deceived, <...> on the one hand, that [in Ukraine] some success will be achieved. On the other hand, they thwarted his peace plan, which meant getting the bowels of Ukraine," Koltashov said.

According to the expert, the agreement between the United States and Ukraine on mineral resources will not have the result that the United States hoped for, and therefore Greenland should act as compensation for alleged losses in American business.

What hinders the common approach of the Europeans and what levers do the parties have?

Earlier, on January 17, Trump announced the introduction of duties in the amount of 10% against France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland due to Greenland, which he believes is necessary for the United States.

The day before, French President Emmanuel Macron said that Trump's threats against Europe to impose duties on the Danish autonomous unit of Greenland were unacceptable and would be met with a coordinated response.

Reuters reported that the ambassadors of the EU member states were summoned to an emergency meeting in Brussels to discuss the issue of the US seizure of Greenland and the duties imposed by the American president on a number of Western countries.
