- A unique patient without a pulse will be discharged from the hospital in St. Petersburg
A unique patient who has had two artificial ventricles implanted at once in Russia is preparing to be discharged from the Mariinsky Hospital in St. Petersburg. This was reported on January 19 in the Telegram channel of the city health committee.
A 36-year-old man was admitted to the hospital with severe diagnoses of cardiomyopathy and terminal heart failure. According to doctors, his heart's performance was "as if the person was no longer alive, but dead."
"A unique patient is being prepared for discharge at the Mariinsky Hospital, who has recently been living without a pulse. At the end of November 2025, for the first time in Russia, two artificial ventricles of the heart were implanted at once — the left and the right," the committee noted.
Igor Reutsky, the chief physician of the hospital, said that the operation was extremely difficult.
"For our specialists, the most difficult thing was to synchronize the work of the two artificial ventricles of the heart, but we successfully completed this task," he noted.
The procedure was performed under the supervision of Gennady Khubulava, Chief freelance Specialist in Cardiovascular Surgery at the St. Petersburg Health Committee, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and lasted about four hours.
