The UK may face the threat of recession and lose up to £21.6 billion due to the possible rapid introduction of new trade duties by the United States at the initiative of American leader Donald Trump. This was reported on January 19 by The Telegraph newspaper.

"Given that the UK economy is currently growing by 0.2–0.3% per quarter, if this blow is struck immediately, it could trigger a recession," the publication said.

It is noted that according to experts, the gross domestic product of Great Britain may decrease by 0.3–0.75% if the threats of the US president to increase import duties to 25% are implemented.

Earlier, on January 17, Trump announced the introduction of duties in the amount of 10% against France, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland due to Greenland, which he believes is necessary for the United States.

The day before, the head of the Belgian Ministry of Defense, Theo Franken, announced that the European Union (EU) has a plan B in case the United States decides to seize the island by military means. He stressed that the participating countries want to make it clear to Washington that they can solve the problem if it arises.

French President Emmanuel Macron said that Trump's threats against Europe to impose duties on the Danish autonomous unit of Greenland were unacceptable and would be met with a coordinated response.

On January 17, Reuters reported that the ambassadors of the EU member states were summoned to an emergency meeting in Brussels to discuss the issue of the US seizure of Greenland and the duties imposed by the American president on a number of Western countries.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed categorical disagreement with the US threat to impose trade duties in connection with the Greenland issue, calling it "absolutely erroneous." The Prime Minister also added that the issue of duties will be discussed directly with the US administration.
