The weather conditions in Kamchatka in December 2025 and the first half of January 2026 are extreme and unique over the past 60 years. This was announced on January 19 by Vera Polyakova, head of the Kamchatka Hydrometeorology Department.

According to her, 370 mm of precipitation fell in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky in December, which is 316% of the monthly norm, and another 163.6 mm (149% of the norm) was added in the first days of January. Such prolonged and intense snowfalls have dramatically increased the avalanche danger in the region.

"Such conditions are extremely rare for the modern observation period. The last time a situation of comparable scale was recorded was more than 60 years ago: in the early 1970s," RIA Novosti quoted Polyakova as saying.

Specialists are monitoring, planning preventive avalanche descents and additional measures to protect settlements. The peninsula continues to eliminate the consequences of a powerful cyclone that was over the region from January 12 to January 16.

On January 13, all flights were postponed in Kamchatka due to a powerful cyclone. Suburban and inter-municipal bus services were also canceled.
