Diabetes remains one of the most common chronic diseases in the world, and it often develops asymptomatically in its early stages. The lack of timely diagnosis increases the risk of serious complications, while scientists know the key signs that may indicate the onset of the disease. This was reported on January 17 in the journal Medical Xpress.

As noted by endocrinologist Alissa Dominguez, the disease is often asymptomatic in the early stages. In this regard, the American Diabetes Association recommends that all adults be screened for diabetes from the age of 35. This is especially true for people with risk factors, including a family history of diabetes, prediabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, gestational diabetes, and overweight or obesity.

Laboratory blood tests remain the most reliable way to detect diabetes, but there are symptoms that may indicate the development of the disease. One of them is frequent urination. According to Dominguez, if a person notices that they have started using the toilet noticeably more often than usual, this can be an alarming signal, although a similar symptom is possible for other conditions.

Another common sign is constant thirst. Elevated blood sugar levels increase the excretion of fluid, which leads to dehydration and a feeling of dry mouth. Often, patients also pay attention to sudden and unexplained weight loss. When insulin is deficient or ineffective, the body begins to use fat and muscle tissue as a source of energy, which leads to a decrease in body weight.

Possible signs of diabetes include skin changes. The doctor points out that skin papillomas can be associated with insulin resistance, and darkening and thickening of the skin in the neck or armpits — the so—called acanthosis - can serve as a physical manifestation of carbohydrate metabolism disorders. In addition, with prolonged elevated blood sugar levels, wound healing slows down, which is more common in more advanced forms of the disease.

The expert emphasizes that waiting for symptoms to appear is not the best strategy. The early stages of diabetes often go unnoticed, so a timely examination, including a fasting glucose test, allows you to identify the disease before complications develop and start treatment on time.

The South China Morning Post (SCMP) newspaper reported on the identification of a possible early marker of Alzheimer's disease by scientists from Singapore. According to them, blockage of brain channels can indicate dementia. The head of the work, director of the Singapore Dementia Research Center, Associate Professor Nagendran Kandia, clarified that the causes of the "clogging" of the glymphatic system are not fully clear, the process may be influenced by age, sleep disorders, cardiovascular diseases, obesity and chronic inflammation.
