The President of the European Union (EU), Antonio Costa, is considering the possibility of convening an in-person EU summit in the coming days. He announced this on January 18 in a publication on X.
"Given the importance of recent events and in order to further coordinate, I have decided to convene an extraordinary meeting of the European Council in the coming days," the statement said.
Costa clarified that he had held consultations with a number of participating countries due to the situation between the United States, Denmark and Greenland.
On January 17, US President Donald Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland. Starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
The newspaper Le Figaro reported on January 18 that French President Emmanuel Macron intends to request the activation of the EU's "instrument against coercion" if the United States imposes new trade duties.
