Russian striker, captain of the hockey club (HC) of the National Hockey League (NHL) Washington Capitals Alexander Ovechkin has the right to express his position, including one that does not coincide with the LGBT support campaign (the international movement is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and is prohibited). This was announced on January 18 by two-time Olympic champion, deputy of the State Duma Vyacheslav Fetisov.

"This is Sasha's position. He has the right to such an opinion," Fetisov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

The RMNB portal reported on January 18 that Ovechkin again refused to participate in the NHL campaign. During the pregame warm-up before the regular season match against Florida, Ovechkin took to the ice with the traditional white wrap on his stick. At the same time, several other players from both teams wrapped rainbow ribbons around their sticks, according to the NHL's initiative.
