Neither the sacred courage of the inhabitants of besieged Leningrad, nor the monstrous crimes of the Nazis during the Great Patriotic War, should be allowed to be forgotten. This memory is our duty to the past and a pledge of the future, which we must pass on to our children and grandchildren. This was announced on January 18 by Federation Council Chairman Valentina Matvienko.

"The sacred memory of the heroism of the Leningraders, as well as the terrible truth about the misanthropic crimes of the European fascists, must be preserved and passed on to new generations without distortion, exclusion or omission," she said in a statement on the agency's website.

Matvienko also pointed to the siege of Leningrad as an unprecedented act of genocide carried out by the European fascist powers, and recalled the importance of bringing this truth to the youth of other countries. She also urged us to be worthy of the exploits of our ancestors and not allow the historical truth to be substituted.

Matvienko said earlier in the day that the West's claim that Russia has allegedly committed aggression against 19 states over the past 100 years is absolutely unacceptable and constitutes blatant misinformation. The Federation Council Chairman also stressed the inadmissibility of "these criminals" distorting facts and falsifying historical events.
