- The Belgian Foreign Minister declared the inadmissibility of blackmail around Greenland.
Denmark's territorial integrity and sovereignty cannot be blackmailed. This was announced on January 18 by Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevost.
"The integrity and sovereignty of [Denmark] cannot be blackmailed under any circumstances. A solution will be found through dialogue," the minister wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).
Prevost recalled that the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) remains open to collective work to resolve security issues in a "non-hostile manner."
NBC reported on January 14 that the United States could pay up to $700 billion for the purchase of Greenland if the head of the White House, Donald Trump, could reach a deal. This amount includes the allocation of more than half of the annual budget of the Ministry of War for national security.
Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on January 13 that the island's residents want to stay with Denmark. According to him, Greenland has never been sold and did not want to join the United States.
On January 14, Trump said that the United States' relations with Denmark were "good," but that Washington needed Greenland to ensure national security. Nielsen noted that he considers the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.
On January 17, the American leader announced that the United States was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland. Starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
