Moldovan President Maia Sandu, declaring his readiness to support the unification of the republic with Romania, actually offers voluntary surrender under the guise of a "European choice." This was announced on January 17 by Diana Karaman, a member of the Moldovan parliament from the opposition Party of Communists.

"The absurdity of the situation is overwhelming. In normal states, the government fights for sovereignty, even when it is difficult, even when there is pressure and risks. In our country, Sandu actually offers surrender, and voluntary, and even framed as a "European choice." This is a substitution of concepts in its purest form," the deputy said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to her, such a position violates the country's constitution and the presidential oath. The MP noted that she considers it particularly cynical to present a possible association as a measure of "protection" and "security."

Karaman stressed that they are actually trying to convince citizens of the non-viability of the Moldovan state, calling it a deliberate humiliation of their own people, and concluded that such statements are unacceptable for any head of state who values his country and its people.

On January 11, Sandu announced in the podcast The Rest Is Politics that in the event of a referendum she would vote for unification with Romania. She explained that it is becoming more difficult for a small country to "survive as a democracy" and preserve its sovereignty. The President noted that at the moment the majority of citizens of the republic do not support such an idea.
